Justice, Law, and Public Safety in Liberia

Courts, laws, rights, accountability, safety, and access to justice

Liberia’s justice system connects the Constitution, Legislature, courts, Ministry of Justice, police, corrections, independent commissions, lawyers, customary institutions, communities, and people seeking protection or remedies.

This collection distinguishes allegations from proven facts, arrest from conviction, proposals from enacted law, policies from binding rules, and informal resolution from a court judgment. Legal sources, effective dates, jurisdiction, procedure, privacy, and due process matter.

How Liberia’s justice system is organized

The Judicial Branch is headed by the Supreme Court and includes subordinate and specialized courts established by law. The Ministry of Justice is the principal executive rule-of-law institution and oversees prosecution, public-safety, corrections, codification, and related functions. The Legislature enacts statutes, while independent commissions, professional bodies, local institutions, civil society, and customary mechanisms have distinct roles.

How to read justice information

  • Use the right source: verify constitutions, statutes, regulations, orders, opinions, and official records.
  • Check legal status: proposed, passed, approved, effective, amended, repealed, stayed, and invalidated are different.
  • Protect due process: accusation, arrest, charge, trial, conviction, and appeal are separate stages.
  • Respect privacy: children, survivors, witnesses, medical information, and sealed records require safeguards.
  • Check jurisdiction and deadlines: the correct court, procedure, remedy, and filing time depend on the case.
