Courts and the Judiciary of Liberia
Liberia Civic justice collection
Liberia’s Constitution vests judicial power in the Supreme Court and subordinate courts established by law. Courts interpret and apply law, decide disputes, review cases within their jurisdiction, and protect due process through procedures that differ by court and case type.
The Supreme Court
The Supreme Court is the head of the Judicial Branch. It exercises appellate and other jurisdiction provided by the Constitution and law. Its opinions, rules, orders, and administrative notices are primary sources for understanding the Court’s work.
Circuit and specialized courts
Circuit Courts exercise broad original jurisdiction where another court does not have exclusive authority and hear certain appeals. Liberia also has specialized courts or divisions addressing matters such as commercial, labor, tax, probate, juvenile, traffic, debt, revenue, and criminal cases.
Magisterial courts
Magisterial courts serve as courts of first instance for matters within their limited jurisdiction. The correct court depends on subject, location, amount, offense, remedy, and current law. Filing in the wrong court or missing a deadline can affect a case.
How to verify a case or decision
- Confirm the full court name, county, case title, docket or file number, and parties.
- Separate allegations, filings, hearings, rulings, judgments, and appeals.
- Check whether an order is final, stayed, appealed, modified, or enforced.
- Use certified records or the official court source for consequential claims.
- Protect children, survivors, witnesses, and legally restricted information.
Independence and accountability
Judicial independence protects decision-making from improper influence. Accountability includes published rules, reasoned decisions, ethical standards, accessible records, fair hearings, court administration, lawful review, and complaint procedures.
