2005 General and Presidential Runoff Election

Liberia’s 2005 General and Presidential Runoff Elections

Liberians voted in presidential and legislative elections on 11 October 2005, followed by a presidential runoff on 8 November 2005. These were the first nationwide elections after the 2003 Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

Presidential result

  • First-round turnout: 1,012,673 voters (74.9%).
  • Runoff turnout: 825,716 voters (61.0%).
  • Ellen Johnson Sirleaf — Unity Party: 478,526 votes (59.4%) in the runoff.
  • George Weah — Congress for Democratic Change: 327,046 votes (40.6%) in the runoff.

Leading first-round candidates

  • George Weah (CDC): 275,265 votes (28.3%).
  • Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (UP): 192,326 votes (19.8%).
  • Charles Brumskine (Liberty Party): 135,093 votes (13.9%).

Legislative elections

Voters also elected 30 senators and 64 representatives. The CDC won the largest bloc in the House of Representatives with 15 seats, while the Coalition for the Transformation of Liberia (COTOL) won the largest Senate bloc with seven seats.
