Examinations and Student Assessment in Liberia

Assessment helps teachers, students, families, schools, and policymakers understand learning. It ranges from daily classroom feedback to standardized examinations and national studies.
Classroom assessment
Assignments, observation, projects, quizzes, practical work, and conversation can identify what learners understand and where support is needed. Assessment should guide teaching rather than serve only as punishment or ranking.
WAEC examinations
The West African Examinations Council administers regional examinations through its Liberia office. Current registration, subjects, timetables, fees, grading, results, and complaint procedures should be confirmed through official notices for the relevant examination year.
National learning assessment
System-level assessments measure patterns across groups and schools. They are not the same as individual school-leaving examinations. Results should include sampling, language, tested grade, subject, scoring method, uncertainty, and comparison limits.
Integrity and security
Examination credibility depends on secure materials, verified candidates, trained supervisors, consistent conditions, marking quality, confidential records, and fair investigation of alleged malpractice.
Results and appeals
A result portal or printed statement should protect student privacy. Correction, verification, withheld-result, and appeal processes must identify the responsible institution, required evidence, deadline, and fee if any.
Fairness and inclusion
Assessment should provide reasonable accommodation for learners with disabilities and avoid barriers unrelated to the skill being measured. Performance comparisons must consider access to teachers, materials, language support, and instructional time.
