Curriculum and Learning Materials in Liberia

A curriculum describes intended learning across subjects and grades. Learning materials—including textbooks, readers, teacher guides, laboratory resources, local examples, media, and digital tools—help turn those expectations into classroom experience.
The national curriculum
The Ministry of Education leads curriculum development, review, piloting, and publication. A draft curriculum, approved curriculum, implementation guide, examination syllabus, and classroom practice are related but distinct documents.
Core learning and civic knowledge
Students need literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, civic understanding, technology, health, physical education, creativity, and practical problem-solving. Liberian history, geography, government, culture, and environment should be taught using reliable and inclusive sources.
Language of instruction
Many children enter school with strong knowledge in a Liberian language while formal materials are often in English. Effective teaching should build comprehension and participation rather than treating home language as a deficiency.
Textbooks and classroom availability
A book may be approved nationally but unavailable in a particular school or shared among many learners. Monitoring should track delivery, student-to-book access, condition, teacher use, replacement, and whether content matches the current curriculum.
Digital materials
Digital learning can expand access but depends on electricity, devices, connectivity, accessibility, teacher support, maintenance, privacy, and offline options. A platform launch does not prove regular student use or learning improvement.
Accuracy and inclusion
Materials should represent Liberia’s communities fairly, credit creators, avoid partisan instruction, protect children, include people with disabilities, and provide a transparent process for correcting errors.
