Roads and bridges connect homes, farms, schools, clinics, markets, ports, border crossings, and county capitals. Their condition affects travel time, prices, emergency access, trade, public services, and opportunity.
Who does what
The Ministry of Public Works is Liberia’s government engineering arm for the design, construction, supervision, and maintenance of roads, bridges, drainage, and public infrastructure. Transport regulation, licensing, traffic management, policing, county administration, contractors, and financing bodies have separate roles.
Understanding road status
A road may be paved, unpaved, under construction, seasonally passable, maintained, damaged, planned, or funded but not started. Announcements, signed contracts, groundbreaking, physical progress, completion, opening, and maintenance are different milestones and should be reported separately.
Road classes and connections
A useful road record identifies the official route or corridor, endpoints, counties and districts served, length, surface, bridges and major crossings, responsible agency, contractor, funding source, project stage, inspection date, and seasonal condition.
Safety and resilience
Good infrastructure includes drainage, safe shoulders, crossings, signs, visibility, slope protection, bridge inspection, axle-load management, and accommodation for pedestrians, cyclists, passengers, people with disabilities, and roadside communities. Climate and rainfall resilience must be designed into construction and maintenance.
Public accountability
Citizens should be able to compare contract scope, cost, schedule, environmental and social safeguards, payments, physical progress, inspection findings, defects, and maintenance responsibility. Liberia Civic will label project claims by source and date.
