Ellen Johnson Sirleaf served as President of Liberia from 2006 to 2018. She was the first woman elected head of state in Africa.

Election record

• 2005: won the presidential runoff as the Unity Party candidate with 478,526 votes, or 59.4%.
• 2011: won re-election; received 607,618 votes in the runoff.

Historical significance

Her two elected terms covered Liberia’s post-conflict reconstruction period and preceded the 2017 peaceful transfer of power.
