Literacy and Lifelong Learning in Liberia
Liberia Civic education collection
Literacy supports education, health, work, civic participation, and access to public services. It includes reading and writing alongside numeracy, digital skills, financial understanding, and media literacy.
Different measures
Census self-reporting, household surveys, school attainment, and direct skills assessments do not produce identical literacy rates. Each statistic needs an age group, language, method, year, and geography.
Youth and adult learning
Conflict, poverty, distance, disability, caregiving, work, migration, and age-grade mismatch may interrupt education. Adult and accelerated programs should offer respectful instruction and recognized progression.
Languages and libraries
A learner may be literate in a Liberian language, English, or several languages. Libraries, radio, religious institutions, community groups, workplaces, phones, and online platforms can support lifelong learning when materials and access exist.
Digital literacy
People need skills to verify sources, protect accounts, recognize fraud and manipulated media, understand privacy, and participate responsibly online.
