Fisheries and Aquatic Resources of Liberia

Liberia’s Atlantic waters, rivers, lagoons, wetlands, and inland water bodies provide fish, employment, trade, and cultural value. The sector includes artisanal, industrial, inland, and aquaculture activity.

Coastal fisheries

Small-scale fishers operate from landing communities across Liberia’s nine coastal counties. Industrial fishing is regulated separately and must respect licensing, monitoring, conservation rules, and protected zones.

Inland fisheries and aquaculture

Rivers, floodplains, and wetlands support inland catches. Fish farming can expand domestic supply when water quality, feed, seed, training, markets, and environmental safeguards are addressed.

Women in the value chain

Women play major roles in processing, smoking, transport, marketing, and household food security. Safer facilities, credit, cold chains, and market access can improve livelihoods and reduce loss.

Sustainable management

Illegal fishing, habitat damage, pollution, weak cold storage, and climate change threaten the sector. Catch and licensing data should be dated, verified, and published without exposing sensitive ecological locations.
