Liberia’s May 1955 general election brought renewed presidential competition but unfolded amid intimidation, disputed returns, and serious political violence.
Presidential election
Incumbent William V. S. Tubman of the True Whig Party won reelection. Former president Edwin Barclay challenged him through an opposition coalition involving the Independent True Whig and Reformation parties. William O. Davies-Bright also entered the presidential contest.
Vice presidency
William R. Tolbert Jr. remained Tubman’s running mate and continued as vice president.
Opposition and campaign conditions
Liberia’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission later reported that the opposition coalition faced harassment during the election period. The contest became entangled with accusations of conspiracy and an alleged assassination attempt against Tubman.
Violence and repression
In the aftermath, opposition figures were arrested or pursued. The deaths of David Coleman and his son John became among the most consequential episodes associated with the political crisis. These events make the election inseparable from the broader history of state power, opposition rights, and political violence in Liberia.
Disputed results
Tubman was declared the winner by a large margin. Barclay alleged ballot stuffing and challenged the credibility of the reported vote. Liberia Civic does not present later-published numerical totals as independently certified because a complete auditable national return has not yet been located.
Constitutional questions
The election period also included constitutional amendments concerning eligibility and public office. Their precise relationship to election administration will be expanded in the referendum archive.
Legislative election
Legislative elections were held in the same cycle, but complete constituency-level returns and seat distributions remain to be verified.
Historical significance
The 1955 contest restored visible presidential opposition after Tubman’s unopposed 1951 race, yet the intimidation and violence surrounding it demonstrated the severe limits on competitive politics.
