Liberia’s 1905 election returned President Arthur Barclay to office and became closely connected to a rare vice-presidential succession problem.
Presidential result
Arthur Barclay of the True Whig Party was reelected president. He defeated former president William D. Coleman, who contested the election on the People’s Party ticket.
Vice-presidential election and vacancy
Joseph D. Summerville was reelected vice president but died on 27 July 1905 before beginning the new term. The vacancy exposed the absence of an effective constitutional replacement mechanism. A constitutional change permitted a special election, through which James Jenkins Dossen was elected vice president and entered office in 1906.
Historical significance
The election extended Barclay’s presidency while the vice-presidential crisis prompted an important institutional response. Dossen later won reelection with Barclay in 1907.
