Liberia held a general election in May 1897 after William David Coleman had succeeded to the presidency.
Presidential result
President William D. Coleman of the True Whig Party was elected to a term in his own right. Coleman had entered the presidency on 12 November 1896 after the death in office of President Joseph James Cheeseman.
From succession to election
The 1897 vote converted Coleman’s constitutional succession into an elected mandate. Joseph J. Ross subsequently served as vice president during Coleman’s elected administration, although a complete vice-presidential return for the election has not yet been verified.
Historical significance
The election began Coleman’s first full presidential term and maintained True Whig control at the end of the nineteenth century.
