Liberia held a general election on 5 May 1891, producing the first presidential transition since Hilary R. W. Johnson took office in 1884.
Presidential result
Joseph James Cheeseman of the True Whig Party defeated Anthony D. Williams Jr. of the New Republican Party. A contemporary report described Cheeseman’s victory as an overwhelming majority and identified William David Coleman of Montserrado County as the elected vice president.
Transition of power
Cheeseman, associated with Grand Bassa County, succeeded Johnson and assumed the presidency in January 1892. Coleman began serving as vice president and would later succeed Cheeseman after the president’s death in office.
