Liberia held a general election in May 1883 after President Anthony W. Gardiner resigned and Vice President Alfred F. Russell assumed the presidency.
Presidential election
Hilary Richard Wright Johnson was the only identified presidential candidate. He received support from both the True Whig Party and Republican Party and was elected unopposed. After the election, Johnson identified himself with the True Whig Party.

Interim presidency
Gardiner resigned on 20 January 1883 during the northwestern boundary dispute. Vice President Alfred Francis Russell constitutionally succeeded him and completed the term until Johnson’s inauguration.
Historical significance
Johnson took office on 7 January 1884. He became the first Liberian president born in Liberia, marking a generational transition in the republic’s leadership.
