Liberia’s 1855 general election produced the first presidential succession since independence.
Presidential contest
President Joseph Jenkins Roberts declined to seek another term. Vice President Stephen Allen Benson, nominated by the True Liberian Party, defeated Edward James Roye of the Whig Party.

Vice president and inauguration
Beverly Page Yates was elected vice president. Benson and Yates took office on 7 January 1856, with Roberts participating in the transfer of power.
Historical significance
The election marked Liberia’s first transfer of the presidency from one elected leader to another. Benson became the country’s second president after having served in public office and as vice president.
