LIBERIA CIVIC VERIFIED HISTORICAL RECORD · SENATE AND HOUSE BY-ELECTIONS
Liberia conducted three major legislative by-election contests in 2019: simultaneous Montserrado County Senate and District 15 House races beginning on 29 July, followed by the Grand Cape Mount County Senate contest on 5 October.
Montserrado County Senate
Abraham Darius Dillon of the Liberty Party, running with the Collaborating Political Parties, won 102,549 votes (55.74%). Paulita C. C. Wie of the Coalition for Democratic Change received 63,971 votes (34.77%). The contest filled the vacancy caused by Senator Geraldine Doe-Sheriff’s death. Dillon was certificated on 9 August 2019.
Montserrado County District 15 House seat
The vacancy followed the death of Representative Adolph A. Lawrence. The initial 29 July poll produced a complaint over irregularities in 20 of the district’s 94 polling places. The NEC ordered voting rerun in those affected polling places on 28 August. After combining the lawful results, Abu Bana Kamara of the Coalition for Democratic Change won 8,678 votes (49.2%), while Telia Urey of the collaborating opposition received 6,868 votes (38.9%). Final results were announced on 29 August.
Grand Cape Mount County Senate
The 5 October contest filled the seat left vacant by Senator Edward B. Dagoseh’s death. Victor Varney Watson of the People’s Unification Party won 6,920 votes (27.73%). Simeon Boima Taylor of the Alternative National Congress placed second with 4,932 votes (19.76%). The poll recorded 24,956 valid votes and 803 invalid votes across 171 polling places. Watson was declared winner on 8 October and certificated on 18 November after complaints were resolved.
