Liberia Civic historical record
Liberia held its regular nationwide general election on 4 May 1875 for president, vice president, and members of the national legislature.
Presidential election
Former President James Spriggs Payne and sitting Vice President Anthony W. Gardiner contested the presidency. A contemporary U.S. diplomatic dispatch reported that Payne was generally understood and accepted as the successful candidate.
The surviving report explains that confirmation was delayed while returns reached Monrovia. It does not reproduce a complete numerical result in the text available to this archive.
Political context
The contest followed Joseph Jenkins Roberts’s restored presidency and continued the Republican Party era. Contemporary commentary associated Gardiner’s political organization with Roberts, while Payne returned to national leadership after his earlier presidency.
Historical significance
Payne’s victory returned him to office for a second, nonconsecutive presidency beginning in 1876.
