Livestock and Animal Production in Liberia
Liberia Civic agriculture collection
Livestock can improve diets, income, savings, manure, farm power, and rural enterprise. Healthy growth requires suitable breeds, feed, housing, veterinary care, biosecurity, humane handling, and safe markets.
Production systems
Poultry
Chickens and other poultry provide meat and eggs. Feed cost, chick quality, disease control, housing, and market access are central.
Pigs
Swine production can generate income but needs dependable feed, sanitation, disease prevention, controlled movement, and responsible waste management.
Goats and sheep
Small ruminants suit many household systems but require grazing management, shelter, parasite control, and access to animal-health services.
Cattle
Cattle production involves longer investment cycles, land and water access, feed planning, animal identification, health, transport, and market infrastructure.
Animal health and One Health
Diseases can move among animals, people, and the environment. Farmers should report unusual illness or deaths, isolate sick animals where safe, follow veterinary guidance, control farm access, keep records, and avoid selling or consuming animals affected by unexplained disease.
A responsible livestock chain
- Choose species and breeds suited to climate, feed, skills, land, and market demand.
- Budget for housing, water, feed, medicines, labor, losses, and transport.
- Use qualified animal-health advice and lawful veterinary products.
- Maintain hygiene and humane handling during production, slaughter, and transport.
- Protect food safety through inspection, cold storage, clean processing, and traceability.
Research and national planning
CARI’s livestock and fisheries research program works on genetic stock, feed, health, technologies, and markets. Liberia’s National Agriculture Development Plan identifies poultry, pigs, cattle, sheep, and goats among targeted value chains.
