Communicable Diseases and Prevention in Liberia
Liberia Civic health collection
Communicable diseases are caused by infectious agents that may spread between people, animals, food, water, vectors, or the environment. Liberia’s prevention and control system combines community action, clinical care, laboratories, surveillance, vaccination, sanitation, and national disease programs.
Major areas of response
National programs address malaria, tuberculosis, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, vaccine-preventable diseases, neglected tropical diseases, diarrheal and respiratory infections, and diseases with outbreak potential. Priorities change with evidence and emerging threats.
Malaria
Prevention includes insecticide-treated nets, vector control, environmental action, and appropriate preventive interventions. Fever can have many causes: testing and treatment should follow current national guidance rather than self-diagnosis or incomplete medication.
Tuberculosis and HIV
Early testing, complete treatment, contact services, confidentiality, and protection from stigma are essential. TB and HIV programs are connected because co-infection affects diagnosis and care. Treatment should not be interrupted without qualified clinical guidance.
Vaccination and outbreak prevention
Routine immunization protects individuals and communities. Surveillance depends on prompt reporting, laboratory confirmation, trained responders, and trustworthy public communication. During an outbreak, follow current instructions from the Ministry of Health and the National Public Health Institute.
Everyday prevention
- Use safe water, sanitation, hand hygiene, and safe food practices.
- Follow the current vaccination schedule.
- Use tested prevention appropriate to the disease and setting.
- Seek early care for persistent fever, breathing difficulty, severe dehydration, unusual bleeding, altered consciousness, or other danger signs.
- Avoid spreading unverified outbreak claims.
