Liberia’s geology contains commercially important iron ore, gold, and diamonds, alongside other mineral occurrences. A mineral occurrence, estimated reserve, exploration license, and active producing mine are different categories and should never be presented as the same thing.
Mining regions
Iron-ore development has historically shaped parts of Nimba, Bong, and Grand Bassa counties. Gold and diamond activity occurs in several regions through industrial, small-scale, and artisanal operations.
Railways and ports
Mining corridors connect inland deposits with Atlantic export facilities, especially around Buchanan and Monrovia. Railways and ports can serve wider development, but access, maintenance, financing, and community impact require transparent agreements.
Public interest questions
Responsible extraction includes lawful licensing, environmental review, worker safety, community consultation, land rights, revenue transparency, site rehabilitation, and protection of rivers and forests.
