Belle represented 0.7% of Liberia’s population in the 2022 census. Communities are found mainly in northwestern Liberia, especially parts of Gbarpolu and Lofa counties.
Language and names
Kuwaa is the language name widely used in linguistic references, while Belle or Belleh is common in Liberian public and census usage. Other spellings appear in older records. Liberia Civic uses “Belle (Kuwaa)” so that readers can find the profile while recognizing that census, community, and linguistic names do not always match exactly.
Kuwaa is generally classified in the Kru branch of the Niger-Congo family. Local varieties are reported, and pronunciation and vocabulary may differ by place. Speakers may also use English, Liberian English, Gola, Kpelle, Loma, or other neighboring languages.
History and cultural life
Belle/Kuwaa histories belong to the forest and inland trading regions of northwestern Liberia. Farming, local markets, hunting, craftwork, oral history, music, dance, family institutions, and knowledge of the surrounding landscape are important areas of community life.
Because Belle/Kuwaa is spoken by a relatively small population, language documentation and intergenerational teaching are especially valuable. Future work should prioritize recordings made with informed consent, locally approved spelling, oral histories, place names, and educational materials led by speakers.
No single practice defines all Belle/Kuwaa people. Descriptions should identify the specific community and source and protect sacred or private knowledge.
