2025 District 5 Representative By-Election
Voters in Nimba County Electoral District 5 elected a new member of the House of Representatives on 12 August 2025 after the seat became vacant.

The National Elections Commission declared Kwagrue the winner after complete reporting. Contemporary reporting recorded 4,795 votes for Kwagrue and 3,938 for his closest challenger, independent candidate Bories B. Barlea.
Why the by-election was held
The District 5 seat became vacant after Representative Samuel Gongben Kogar won the April 2025 Nimba County senatorial by-election and moved to the Senate. NEC then organized a separate representative by-election for the district.
Election and review chronology
- 12 August 2025: voting took place in 21 precincts and 69 polling places.
- 13 August 2025: NEC declared Kortor Sehwongbay Kwagrue the winner after tallying.
- 15 August 2025: NEC’s election calendar recorded the formal final-results announcement.
- 19 August 2025: Bories B. Barlea withdrew his complaint, according to the UN human-rights report.
- September 2025: the remaining electoral dispute continued through the NEC adjudication process.
- 3 October 2025: NEC certificated Kwagrue as representative-elect following resolution of the challenge.
Verification and transparency
Ten candidates contested. The official NEC portal reports 100% of polling places received, 15,749 total ballots and 52.81% turnout. Two candidates initially challenged aspects of the count. Their allegations are recorded here as claims—not as established findings—and the final NEC declaration remained in force.
