Water, sanitation, sewerage, drainage, hygiene, and waste systems protect health, reduce flooding, support education and commerce, and make settlements safer and more resilient.
Institutions and responsibilities
The Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation provides public water and sewer services within its statutory service areas. The National Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Commission coordinates and regulates the WASH sector. Public Works, environmental, health, municipal, county, and community institutions have related but distinct responsibilities.
Water-service infrastructure
Systems may include sources, wells, intakes, treatment, pumps, storage, transmission, distribution, public taps, household connections, meters, laboratories, and maintenance teams. An installed facility does not establish safe, affordable, continuous service; functionality and water quality need dated verification.
Sanitation and wastewater
Safe sanitation covers containment, emptying, transport, treatment, disposal or reuse—not just the presence of a toilet. Sewerage, septic systems, public facilities, fecal-sludge management, and sanitation for schools, markets, and health facilities require clear ownership and maintenance.
Drainage and flood resilience
Storm drains, culverts, channels, retention areas, wetlands, roads, waste collection, and land-use planning work as one system. Blocked or undersized drainage can worsen flooding, contamination, erosion, traffic disruption, and disease risk.
Measuring access
Useful records distinguish source type, service level, safety testing, reliability, distance, queue time, price, accessibility, seasonal variation, and responsible operator. A project announcement should be tracked through finance, construction, commissioning, functionality, and maintenance.
