Liberia held a nationwide general election on 1 May 1877, together with voting on proposed constitutional amendments.
Presidential election
President James Spriggs Payne and former Vice President Anthony W. Gardiner again contested the presidency. Contemporary diplomatic reporting states that returns arrived from every district and that Payne and his supporters conceded Gardiner’s victory.
The same report described Payne’s defeat as exceptionally large. Gardiner’s allies were also expected to command a two-thirds majority in the next legislature.
Constitutional proposals
Proposed constitutional amendments were overwhelmingly rejected. A contemporary report recorded only 29 votes nationwide in favor, but the complete question wording and full district tabulation remain under archival review.
Transition and significance
Gardiner and Vice President Daniel B. Warner were inaugurated on 7 January 1878. The election marked the decisive rise of the True Whig Party, which would dominate Liberian national politics for more than a century.
