Political context
By 1853, Roberts had served as president since the constitutional government was inaugurated in January 1848. His administration had pursued diplomatic recognition abroad while consolidating the institutions and territorial claims of the young republic.
Although the election followed the constitutional cycle, political participation remained limited by the citizenship, property, residency, and other qualifications operating under the 1847 Constitution.
Transition ahead
The 1853 election was Roberts’ final reelection during his first period as president. In 1855 he declined to seek another term, opening the way for a contested election won by Vice President Stephen Allen Benson.
