Liberia Civic historical record
Liberia’s May 1871 election unfolded during a fundamental dispute over presidential term limits and the authority to conduct the vote.
Disputed election
President Edward James Roye maintained that a term-extension amendment allowed him to remain in office and attempted to prevent the regular biennial election. Opponents rejected that interpretation and proceeded with an election in May 1871.
Former president Joseph Jenkins Roberts of the Republican Party was returned unopposed. Roye and the True Whig administration did not recognize the election.
October political rupture
The disagreement developed into a constitutional and political crisis. Contemporary diplomatic correspondence records that Roye was deposed on 26 October 1871. A provisional executive committee governed until Vice President James Skivring Smith arrived and completed the remainder of the existing term.
Transition
Roberts took office on 1 January 1872. His inauguration restored him to the presidency more than fifteen years after the end of his earlier administration.
