Hospitals, health centers, clinics, laboratories, pharmacies, ambulance services, and community programs form a connected care network. Availability differs by county, facility level, staffing, equipment, supply, season, road access, and referral capacity.
Understanding facility types
A clinic normally provides primary and preventive services. A health center may provide a broader range of outpatient, maternity, diagnostic, and observation services. District and county hospitals provide secondary care, while major referral hospitals provide more specialized services. Actual capacity must be verified facility by facility.
Building a trustworthy directory
Liberia Civic’s future directory will distinguish government, private, faith-based, and nonprofit ownership; show county and district; list verified services and contacts; identify the responsible licensing authority; and display a “last checked” date. A facility will not be labeled operational merely because it appears in an old list.
Before traveling for care
- Call or confirm that the service and relevant clinician are available.
- Ask whether a referral, appointment, identification, record, or payment is required.
- Confirm transport options, especially for night, rainy-season, maternity, or emergency travel.
- Carry current prescriptions and relevant medical records when possible.
Access and accountability
Distance, road conditions, disability access, language, cost, respectful treatment, privacy, electricity, water, sanitation, medicines, and staffing all affect meaningful access. Directories should enable corrections and document when information changes.
